Cop charged in alleged cover-up is ‘ridiculously innocent,’ attorney says

NEWARK – During almost a full day of closing statements in the federal trial of a Bayonne cop accused of covering up police brutality, attorneys presented jurors drastically different interpretations of evidence presented throughout the case.

The government has argued Francis Styles intentionally lied on incident reports relating to the Dec. 27, 2013 arrest of Brandon Walsh in efforts to cover up a case of police brutality for fellow officer Domenico Lillo. The defense team, however, has pushed to prove Styles was exposed to pepper spray and suffered a head injury during a violent struggle with Walsh, altering the officer’s perception.
