A Los Angeles police detective, who allegedly ran two businesses while collecting pay on leave for stress, pleaded not guilty today to seven felonies related to workers’ compensation fraud.

John Xavier Vach Jr., 38, is charged with four counts of insurance fraud and one count each of perjury by declaration, attempted perjury under oath and attempted grand theft.

Vach was targeted by the department’s workers’ compensation fraud unit, based on a claim Vach filed in late 2007, police said.

“Investigators working in partnership with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Healthcare Fraud Division and the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office established probable cause to believe that Detective Vach knowingly signed fraudulent documents under the penalty of perjury and received benefits to which he was not entitled,” police said in a statement.

Vach allegedly operated two private businesses while he was out on a disability claim for job-related stress.
