Officer Daryle W. Black

When Officers Daryle Black and Rick Delfin’s patrol car was shot at with automatic weapons  during their drive through a high concentration gang area in Long Beach, only one of them survived. Delfin sustained a bullet in the head and leg and quickly sped their car out of the area, but Black did not make it through his two head wounds and died the following day in a hospital on April 30, 2000.

Approximately 15 AK-47 rounds were fired at the Long Beach officers. A pregnant woman was struck by bullets through the walls of her home, neither she nor her fetus suffered fatal injuries. The officers had stopped near a residence that was hosting a birthday party for a little girl when Compton gang members Ramon Sandoval Jr. and Miguel Camacho stopped by their rival’s home to crash the party. Sandoval was sentenced to death.

Although he had no children of his own, “I was most proud of him in the way that he truly reached the children of the community,” said Connell of his brother.  “It was almost like a paradox. He was a very big person, with muscles and very strong, but he could reach any kid at any level.” Officer Black served in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of corporal, before joining Orange County as deputy sheriff and becoming an expert in prison gangs as he moved to the gang unit of Long Beach.

The Daryle Black Memorial Fund was created in his memory at Long Beach Police Dept., Youth Services Division, 1957 Pacific Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90806. Donations may also be made to the Long Beach Youth Activities and D.A.R.E. Inc.
