Deputy Jerry Ortiz
Deputy Jerry Ortiz, 35, was killed by a straight shot to the head when he knocked on a door investigating a shooting from the previous day. While speaking to the woman at the apartment, a man appeared from behind the cracked doorway and delivered the fatal blow in full view of his own two 6 and 8-year-old girls.
Jose Luis Orozco was found hiding in a bathtub a few houses away. Facing one count of murder in the gang investigator’s slaying, special circumstance allegations of murder of a peace officer, murder while lying in wait, murder to avoid arrest and carrying out the crime to benefit his gang, Orozco was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to death. The Mexican Mafia member’s attorneys did not have much to defend with 5 witnesses to the incident and a corroborating taped prison conversation on the stand. The officer’s death was celebrated by Orozco’s associates’ rap graffiti painted about town shortly after the shooting.
Deputy Ortiz’s brother-in-law was also killed in the line of duty by stabbing from an inmate at the California Institution for Men in Chino. Ortiz is survived by his wife, two sons, and mother.
