Officer Matthew Pavelka

Burbank Police Officer Matthew Pavelka, 26, arrived to a backup call by Gregory Campbell when he stopped a Cadillac Escalade SUV without license plates in an area known for drug trafficking amongst other criminal activities. The two officers approached and ordered the two male subjects to exit their vehicle who alighted opening fire with automatic weapons. Gunman Ramon Aranda was mortally wounded, as was Matthew Pavelka who died during surgery on November 10, 2003.

The second suspect David Garcia was found in Tijuana. A portion of the Golden State (5) Freeway was renamed Officer Matthew Pavelka Memorial Freeway after the fallen officer on an approximate $1200 bill footed by Caltrans, but the signs were removed a ‘187’ tag in reference to California Penal Code section was found on the two plaques.

Matthew Pavelka is survived by his father, veteran LAPD detective Michael Pavelka, a 29-year veteran detective of the Los Angeles Police Department, and his mother Sue.
