Pharrell Williams finally released his album called
G I R L on Monday after being announced just a few short weeks ago, and has been picking up strong feedback from fans. Although his hit song Happy is number #1 on the charts he is getting a lot of criticism for his album cover.

Fans spoke out on Twitter that the musician didn’t feature a black lady on the cover of the album which he says is an “ode to women”. They were very vocal, even speculating that he didn’t think black is beautiful.

Pharrell called Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club to speak on the cover. He said there is a black girl on it, she’s from Wisconsin and he dated her about 10 to 12 years ago.

Pharrell went on to say that “If they just bothered to listen to my album, they’d know that my album was an ode to women, period,” he ranted.

Pharrell added that “The one thing I was trying to help and aid in changing is this crazy statuesque standard of — you’ve gotta be white and thin for you to be beautiful.”

And noted ”My mom is a black woman, my business is run by another black women and I’m married to a black woman, what are you talking about?”

Yet, the cover clearly shows lack of diversity when it comes to brown hued women. There’s a white woman, and two ambiguous light-skinned women on the cover, but Pharrell is the only melanin enriched person.

Atleast the women are not half naked. How many times have we seen half naked black women on album covers and in videos? I never hear too many women complain about that. May be they are complaining because there is no half naked black woman on the cover. Pharrell is a great artist, and he is being very diverse by having white and black women on the cover. Light skin women are still black. Be secure about yourselves women. We do not need to be posted on album covers to feel honored. Get real.
