Streetgangs.com has created a series of Los Angeles gang maps and using using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software by ESRI, anyone can view them.
We have constructed a digital set of gang maps showing Black & Hispanic gang territories in Los Angeles County for 1960, 1972, 1978, 1996, and 2010.
A detailed description of those files which are in GIS shape files format along with the attribute data that you can view in Arc View.
If you do not have Arc View you can still view these digital shape files by using ArcExplorer, a free lightweight GIS data viewer developed by ESRI. This free software offers an easy way to perform basic GIS functions including display, query, and data retrieval applications and supports a wide variety of standard data sources.
The new ArcExplorer 3 is a complete, easy-to-use GIS data viewer that displays and queries locally stored GIS data (see above). ArcExplorer 3 is built with Java, which allows you to enjoy cross-platform support. And most important it is free. You will receive a version of this software along with all the digital gang maps that will be compatible with all Windows and Solaris operating systems.
