Police have a suspect in custody for the drive-by shooting early this morning, according to The Associated Press. The shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. across the street from the Virginia Avenue Park.
A patrolling officer apparently heard a gunfire and then saw a vehicle speeding away from the scene. During a short police pursuit, the driver jumped from the vehicle and was captured, said AP.
The victim, identified only as a 30-year-old man, was found dead in the street where the gunfire erupted. According to CBS 2 News, he died of gunshot wounds to the chest.
The suspect was idenitified as 36-year-old Terry Holt, who was held without bail on a parole violation, said AP. Police say he has not been charged with anything in connection with the shooting.
As many as 15 rounds might have been fired during the shooting. A motive for the shooting was not immediately available.
It was the seventh murder in the past six weeks in normally quiet Santa Monica. The city had just one murder all of 1997.
