Deputy Joe Monarrez, 36, was reportedly arresting someone in connection with a carjacking Saturday night on the 1000 block of Gerhart Avenue when another person shot him once in the upper torso. The Associated Press reports the deputy's injuries are not life-threatening and he was released from the hospital early Sunday. "It'll probably be a couple of weeks before he returns to duty," Deputy Cruz Solis told reporters. The carjacking suspect was arrested Saturday but the gunman and two other men -- all known gang members -- escaped, said CBS 2 News. Deputies sealed off the area near the East Los Angeles border after the shooting around 10:30 p.m. Satuday and searched for several hours but didn't find the men. Three suspects were taken into custody Sunday and held without bail at the East Los Angeles sheriff's station. AP reports they were booked for investigation of attempted murder of a peace officer and carjacking. It wasn't known how they were captured.
