CBS 2 News reported David Anthony Mack, 38, was still on the force when he committed the 1997 robbery at a Bank of America branch with the help of a bank employee he had an affair with.
Mack was also ordered to repay the stolen money, most of which has not been recovered. Mack's attorney, Donald Re, said he would appeal the conviction.
Mack, who grew up in Compton, was a former track star at the University of Oregon who was among the world's top 800-meter runners in the early 1980s.
Mack was convicted March 17 of armed bank robbery, conspiracy to commit armed bank robbery and use of an assault weapon during a crime of violence.
Members of Mack's family, including a young daughter and son, were joined by friends and community leaders who wrote letters to the judge asking for leniency, describing Mack as a good father and police officer.
But investigators said that Mack had a seven-year affair with a bank employee, Errolyn Romero, who helped him rob the bank where she was an assistant manager. She ordered extra money to be delivered to the bank on the day of the robbery, and helped Mack get through bulletproof doors after the money in three bags was delivered by an armored truck.
Mack and Romero were arrested after she failed a lie-detector test then told police she helped Mack carry out the Nov. 6, 1997 robbery.
The television station said Romero, 27, has pleaded guilty and was scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 18. She could face up to five years for conspiracy.
Authorities say two bank robbery accomplices, one inside the bank and a getaway driver, have not yet been identified. Mack allegedly went on a spending spree immediately following the bank robbery, including a Las Vegas trip with Perez and another officer. Receipts for about $30,000 he had spent were found hidden at his home.

LOS ANGELES, Posted 2:30 p.m. September 13, 1999 -- A former Los Angeles Police Department officer convicted of staging a takeover bank robbery that netted $722,000 was sentenced Monday to 14 years and three months in federal prison. 
During his nine-year career with the LAPD, Mack was credited with saving the life of his partner by killing a drug dealer in 1993. Ironically the officer who was saved, Rafael A. Perez, 32, pleaded guilty last month to possession of cocaine taken from police evidence lockers, reported CBS 2 News.
