LOS ANGELES, Posted 7:48 a.m. PST December 15, 1999 -- The number of cases believed to be tainted by corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department is rising rapidly.
The scandal involved anti-gang officers alleged to have engaged in a pattern of misconduct that included shooting unarmed suspects, framing suspects and providing tainted testimony.
"This is the biggest problem I have seen in my 31 years in the district attorney's office," said Garcetti, who already has seven prosecutors reviewing problem cases full time.
Garcetti told The Times that there is no doubt his office will seek the release of more inmates because of tainted convictions, although he is not certain how large the number ultimately will be. The scandal, Garcetti said, probably will take years to be unraveled.

Alleged Misconduct Could Take Years To Unravel
It's now believed more than 3,300 criminal cases could be compromised as a result of the scandal involving officers at the LAPD's Rampart Division, CBS 2 News reported. Initially, District Attorney Gil Garcetti was planning to review about 40 suspect cases. 
Both Garcetti and Public Defender Michael Judge told the Los Angeles Times
in interviews that a massive review is required and they will need additional resources to handle the task.
