(Aug. 13, 2002) *Last Sunday's 100.3 The Beat Summer Jam 2002 concert at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, Calif., got turned out and 15,000 people went home with egg on their face.
The fight erupted during LL Cool J's set at around 7:35 PM PT and according to police It eventually spilled onto the main stage.
"Security personnel reported that gang members dressed in purple attire and red clothing had stormed the stage and taken over the event," Lt. Dave Freeland of the Irvine Police Department reported in a statement. "Persons in attendance reported that these individuals had obtained metal bars back stage, and had begun clubbing people."
Officers from six nearby police agencies and Orange County Sheriff's deputies responded to the site and by 9 p.m. had evacuated the concert grounds and parking lot.
Three people suffered minor injuries and one person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, officials said. No arrests were made as a result of the fight.
The show's lineup also included Ja Rule, Mystikal, the Murder Inc. Family, Truth Hurts, Avant, Dave Hollister, Mr. Cheeks, Trick Daddy & Trina, Amerie, and Tweet. Nelly was scheduled to close the show and would've come on after LL Cool J.
"I think that it's just a prime example of how much, how we as black men really need ... someone around us who can guide us in the right direction and how we are so in desperate need of attention that we would ruin an event just to feel important," LL told a local TV station.
