2 held in fatal drive-by
Monday, June 14, 2004 - LONG BEACH — Two local men, who police say are known Asian gang members, were arrested within hours of the fatal drive-by shooting of a 20-year-old Long Beach resident.
But the investigation is far from over, police said Monday.
Jose Corona was shot at about 1:30 a.m. as he walked out of a house in the 900 block of Cerritos Avenue with a group of friends.
Police were told the gunman had driven by in a light-colored SUV, and found the SUV within hours, said Sgt. David Cannan, a Long Beach Police Department spokesman.
Driving that SUV was Jimmy Kamnoi, 21, of Long Beach, Cannan said. Kamnoi was arrested and held on $1 million bail.
Homicide investigators working on the case were then able to glean enough information that a judge signed two search warrants Sunday afternoon. One was issued by SWAT officers in the 1300 block of Dawson Avenue and the other carried out by Gang and Homicide investigators in the 1400 block of St. Louis Avenue.
Those searches led to the arrest of a second suspect, 21-year-old Sambath Horn, also of Long Beach. He, too, is being held on $1million bail on a charge of murder, the sergeant said.
But the case is not complete, Cannan said, and investigators are looking for more suspects.
On Monday, Corona's father spent the day walking the neighborhood and talking to families, pleading with them share all the information they have with police.
Despite the arrests, Cannan said, the motive for the attack remains unknown, although it appears to be gang-related.
Corona himself was not a gang member, his family said. He had attended Lakewood High School, and spent a lot of time with his father and stepmother who live near Wilson.
But the Hellman neighborhood where he grew up as a little boy has a long history of gangs. It also is home to many of Corona's relatives, including his mother, and friends, some of whom had or have gang ties.
So his family asked Monday that his friends and the community work with police.
Anyone with information is asked to call Homicide Detective Mark McGuire at (562) 570-7244.
