Neighbors aid Cherry Ave. drug bust
Thursday, June 17, 2004 - LONG BEACH — Residents weary of living among drugs and related crimes helped police crush an allegedly gang-led drug operation in Central Long Beach Wednesday night.
Seven people gang members or affiliates, police said were arrested and a substantial amount of what investigators believe is rock cocaine and marijuana was seized in the raid, said Nancy Pratt, a Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman.
A lengthy investigation was launched after residents in the 1700 block of Cherry Avenue complained of constant drug dealing at a home in the area. Officers conducted the surveillance and subsequent raid, carried out at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, Pratt said.
Found in the home along with the drugs and suspected dealers were six small children, who were turned over to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. There were two boys ages 1 and 2 and four girls ages 6, 7, 8 and 10 Pratt said.
Arrested Wednesday were: Tyrone Thompson, 45; Kathleen Barrow, 40; Gregory Calhoun, 18, Samantha Hollins, 22; Sherie Jarvis, 21; Yakema Ivy, 28; and Marche Ford, 31.
All of those arrested are Long Beach residents, except Ford, who is from San Bernardino, Pratt said.
Two other Long Beach residents were arrested at the home over the weekend. They were identified as Andrew Williams, 55, and Donti Jordan, 22, police said.
Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call the Narcotics Enforcement detail at (562) 570-7221.
