Shooting blamed on gang hostility
Monday, July 19, 2004 - LANCASTER -- A 19-year-old man shot a 16-year-old Lancaster boy in the head during a
street encounter last year because of "ongoing hostility," a prosecutor claimed Monday.
Jamaul Monk, also of Lancaster, is due to appear in Los Angeles
Superior Court next month on a charge of attempted murder and on gun and
gang allegations in the February 2003 shooting.
"He did shoot someone related to a gang incident and inflicted some
severe injuries," Deputy District Attorney Carlos Chung said. "It's been
an ongoing problem. The problems were pre-existing to this incident. It's
not an issue that just erupted. It was ongoing hostility."
The boy who was shot remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound at the
base of his skull. Monk has pleaded not guilty to all charges and was being
held in lieu of $1.5 million bail.
Maximum sentences on the charges could include a life sentence and an
additional sentence of 25 years to life, Chung said.
The shooting occurred about 11:40 a.m. Feb. 17, 2003, in the 44000 block
of Carolside Avenue as the 16-year-old was walking home with his younger
brother.
The 16-year-old was called over to a group of young men who said they
wanted to talk with him. After a brief discussion, one of the men --
authorities claim it was Monk -- pulled out a handgun and opened fire,
deputies said.
The boy lay bleeding in the street while the young men ran off in
different directions. The wounded boy was later taken to an undisclosed
hospital, and Chung said his condition is improving.
Monk turned himself in at the Lancaster sheriff's station in May 2003
after the charges were filed and after investigators released a photo of
him to the media.
