Police: Man helped cop killer hide
Thursday, November 18, 2004 - BURBANK - A 22-year-old Sun Valley man was
expected to be arraigned today and charged with helping the man accused of killing Burbank police Officer Matthew Pavelka
try to escape arrest.
Jesus Sandoval of Sun Valley was arrested by Los Angeles police on
Wednesday evening after police approached the car he was in to make a
traffic stop, investigators said. A short car chase ensued and the car was stopped at Sunland and San Fernando
boulevards.
Because Burbank police had a warrant for his arrest, Sandoval was
transferred to the Burbank jail and booked on suspicion of harboring a
fugitive. Police said Sandoval may be a member of the Vineland Boys, the
same street gang that Pavelka's alleged killer, David Garcia, reportedly belongs to.
Burbank police have other outstanding warrants for people believed to be
involved with Garcia, 20, of Sunland, who was arrested in Mexico 12 days after police say he shot Pavelka to death on Nov.
15, 2003.
"I know they do anticipate more arrests in this matter. When? It might
have to do with the court testimony and trials for people who have already
been arrested," said Sgt. Jay Jette, a spokesman for the Burbank Police Department.
Garcia is due to appear in Pasadena Superior Court on Dec. 22 for a
pretrial conference. He was indicted in April on capital murder, weapons and
drug charges by a Los Angeles County grand jury, which District Attorney Steve Cooley said would speed up proceedings.
Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Garcia.
Pavelka, 26, was a Santa Clarita resident with only 10 months on the
force when he was killed. Officials on Monday dedicated a three-mile portion of the Golden State (5) Freeway in his
honor.
Another officer was critically wounded when he was shot twice in the
gunfight with Garcia and Ramon Aranda, 25, who was killed in the shootout.
Greg Campbell, 42, of Santa Clarita has since been promoted to detective and
came back to work in August on a flexible work schedule that allows him to attend physical therapy.
"I'm going to work here every day until I retire, until they push me out of here," Campbell said.
Sandoval was being held at Burbank jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. He was
due to be arraigned today in Burbank Superior Court and faces up to a year
behind bars if convicted.
