Police to target gangs, fireworks
Saturday, December 25, 2004 -
PICO RIVERA --
The New Year will bring a renewed attack on street gangs and illegal
fireworks in Pico Rivera, said Capt. Irma Becerra, commander of the Pico Rivera Station.
"We're going to take a very aggressive approach,' she said.
Mayor Carlos Garcia said extra deputies will be out this Fourth of July, cracking down on
people selling illegal fireworks.
"Our city enjoys the 'safe and sane' fireworks, but the illegal stuff is proliferating,'
he said.
In June, Whittier police discovered thousands of pounds of firecrackers and illegal
fireworks stashed in a building and converted trailer in Pico Rivera.
"You can't even tell the difference when you look at the product,' Garcia said.
Becerra said she will keep anti-gang programs in place in 2005.
"Gang members ... recruit new members and remain gang members for a very long time,' she
said. "For some, that's all they know.'
Because taggers and gang members communicate through graffiti, deputies and city officials
plan to paint it over as quickly as possible.
"The graffiti problem is one that we take very seriously,' Becerra said. "It looks ugly.
It looks dirty.'
Vandalism leads to worse crimes, including shootings, she said.
"The gang members are continuing their lawless ways, but we are continuing to arrest
them.'
Station leaders also have been looking for crime trends. Auto theft has risen dramatically.
Detectives are aware of a string of vehicle thefts in one particular area, she said.
"We are paying close attention to where and what time they occurred,' she said.
