Stockton hiring school anti-gang coordinator

Armed with federal anti-gang grant money, Stockton police are hiring a gang violence prevention coordinator who will work in the city's schools.Police Sgt. Rodney Rego, who manages the department's gang task force, says there are 2,900 known gang members in Stockton, and that recruitment often begins as young as nine. The department will use money from a two-year, $197,000 federal grant.Therefore, Rego says, it's safe to assume that at one time or another gang members pass through the halls of one of Stockton's schools. Police say the gang violence prevention coordinator will with existing community organizations to decrease the likelihood of children joining gangs and will reach out to the families of children already in gangs, among other duties.Twenty-nine candidates have already applied for the new position, and application will be accepted through Dec. 5.
