The victim's teenage daughters were injured in the attack but are expected to survive, officials say.
A woman was killed and her two teenage daughters injured, one critically, in a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles, officials said today.
Stephanice Latrice Smith, 37, was driving back from the store and had stopped near 102nd St. and Denver Avenue about 8:30 p.m. Sunday when another car pulled up and fired shots into her car, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Smith, of Wilmington, was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead about an hour later, said Officer Kate Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department. Her 13-year-old daughter was shot in the arm, and the other daughter, between 18 and 19 years old, was in critical condition, Lopez said. The teenagers were expected to survive, Winter said.
Numerous shots were fired from what appeared to be a 9-millimeter handgun, according to preliminary police reports, said Officer Sam Park. The suspects' car was believed to be a champagne-colored Nissan Maxima or Altima, Park said.
Police were investigating the possibility that the incident was gang-related, but the victims did not appear to be affiliated with gangs, Lopez said.
