A group of high school students are the first to be arrested in Salina under a new law that targets street gang recruitment.
Salina Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield says that four students at Salina South High School were arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges that could include recruiting street game members and disorderly conduct. The recruitment charge is a felony, and is a relatively new law.
According to Mansfield three teens were allegedly beating a fourth teen as part of a gang initiation called "jumping in". Mansfield says that 16-year-old Trea Drake, 15-year-old Jonathan Franco, and 15-year-old Cody Stalder were beating 17-year-old James Bunting.
The alleged initiation was taking place after school last Thursday, near the greenhouse at Salina South High School. Allegedly Bunting was joining the others in a gang that calls themselves "Crips".
All four teens were arrested and released to the custody of their parents.
