Teen shot at Mother's Day party in Fremont after gang clashBy Ben Aguirre Jr., The Argus Posted: 05/11/2009 08:38:29 AM PDT Updated: 05/11/2009 09:30:18 AM PDT
FREMONT -- A 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg this weekend at a Mother's Day party after an argument cropped up between the DJ and partygoers when it was learned that the performer was a gang member, authorities said.
Multiple shots were fired near and in front of a home on Franklin Street about 11 p.m. Saturday, but only the boy was struck, Sgt. Chris Mazzone said. The boy was treated at a nearby hospital for a non-life-threatening wound.
A 23-year-old man walking with the boy later noticed that he had a bullet hole in his shirt, but he was not harmed, the sergeant said.
During the party, attendees learned that DJ was involved in a gang and determined that it was "disrespectful" for him to be there,'Mazzone said.
A short while later, the DJ and a partygoer got into an argument in front of the home, during which the DJ pulled out a sharp object and threatened to harm people, witnesses told police.
A few minutes later, an estimated six shots were fired by man in a car who was wearing a royal blue rag over his face. Partygoers told police that they believe the shots were intended to scare the crowd -- many of whom were clad in red -- that had gathered in front of the home, the sergeant said.
Fremont police have turned the investigation over to the Southern Alameda County Gang Violence Suppression Task Force.
