Willits assault has gang tiesBy Linda Williams/TWN Staff Writer Posted: 05/15/2009 12:13:43 PM PDT
A 20-year-old Willits man suffered minor injuries in what the Mendocino County Sheriff's Department is calling a gang-related attack in the unincorporated area south of Willits last Thursday morning. One man has been arrested; a 16-year-old suspected accomplice is still at large. Police have not identified the assault victim.
At about 8:20 a.m. on May 7, the victim reportedly was standing outside a Trembly Court residence when he was approached by two men in a red vehicle. Police say the driver and passenger made "gang" comments, then attacked the victim with rocks and a weapon improvised from a piece of wood wrapped in metal fencing.
The victim and witnesses told police they recognized the older assailant as Juan Pablo Duran, 21, of Willits. Duran left the scene before deputies arrived, but was later located and taken into custody without incident.
Duran was arrested May 8 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, participating in a street gang and violating probation.
Duran was on probation after pleading guilty in April 2008 to an assault with a deadly weapon charge stemming from a January 2008 attack in Ukiah at a Denny's Restaurant.
Duran was sentenced to 270 days in county jail and three years probation. Police say Duran is a member of the Norteņo street gang.
In the Denny's attack, three alleged members of the Norteņos attacked two young men and two juveniles aged 16 and 11 after the victims left the restaurant, punching one man several times in the face, knocking him to the ground and throwing rocks at him, according to police reports.
When the group attempted to escape in a vehicle, the attackers showered it with rocks, breaking out the rear and side windows as well as the windshield. A rock hit the 16-year-old female in the head, injury her before the gang members fled on foot, say police.
