The Oxnard City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the use of a $399,690 grant for a program designed to address gang-related gun violence.
The grant, from the California Emergency Management Agency, will be used for the California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention project, or CalGRIP.
The Oxnard Police Department will match the dollar amount of the grant with money from its personnel operating budget.
The CalGRIP project, called “Operation PeaceWorks,” addresses gun violence through social intervention, outreach and other measures, according to a report prepared by Cmdr. Scott Hebert. It is based on the Boston Gun Project’s Operation Ceasefire.
The local effort is a collaboration with the Oxnard Police Department; the Port Hueneme Police Department; the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; City Corps; Social Outreach Services; Parents of Murdered Children, and the Oxnard Alliance for Community Strength.
The grant award period began in April and extends through March 2011.
