Why was Monster Kody named on the LA’s top ten gang members?

In 2007 Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief William Bratton decided to name top 10 most wanted gang members and have press conferences announcing their captures. Although crime and violence had been on the decline, this new strategy went forward.

In March of 2007 author and former inactive Eight Tray Gangster Crip member Kody “Monster” Scott also known as Sanyika Shakur was placed on the top ten most wanted gang members list, even though his crime had nothing to with gangs or gang bangin’ and more to do with a car transaction that went wrong. He was placed on the gang list for committing an assault and taking a car from the person.

Sanyika Shakur is known for writing Autobiography of an LA Gang Member published in 1993 where he chronicled his life as a member of the Eight Tray Gangster Crips during the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

In 2007 he plead guilty to the assault and was sentenced to 6-years and served his time in Pelican Bay solitary confinement also know as the Security Housing Unit(SHU). He was released in August 2012.
