Double murder: Witness describes sheltering under a van as shots ring out at Long Beach flower shop 6 years ago

LONG BEACH >> A witness on Tuesday described in court scrambling under a van while shots rang out, gunfire that ki*led his two friends more than six years ago in front of a Long Beach flower shop.

Sovannkoma Tes and his friends, Austin Seng and Chamreun Kong, were buying flowers to put on a friend’s grave. But they never made it.

Now, four people charged with the double murder are in court, where a judge is poised to decide whether they will face trial.

Christopher Ellis, 26, who was arrested and charged in the case in November 2010, and Irineo Cabrera, 28, Chase Strike, 21, and Robert Ramirez, 24, appeared Tuesday morning in the courtroom of Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Judith Meyer in Long Beach for their roles in the shooting deaths of Seng and Kong, according to a Long Beach Police statement. The men were charged in March 2014 with first-degree murder plus gang enhancements in the case, officials said.

A second witness called Tuesday afternoon testified that he had a conversation with Strike in which Strike revealed details about the shooting and placed Ramirez as the shooter.

The preliminary hearing will continue this morning.

Tes, the first witness called to testify at the hearing, said he, Seng, Kong and another friend who was a minor went to a flower shop near Cherry Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard around 2 p.m. March 1, 2009 to buy flowers for a friend’s grave. Tes testified that he and Kong were members of the Asian Boyz gang but that Seng and their other friend were not gang members.

The group had just parked their cars when two men approached.

“This black dude starts walking past, mad-dogging me,” Tes said. “[Kong] says, ‘What the [expletive deleted] you looking at?'”

He identified the man as Ellis in court.

A second man, whom Tes said might be Strike, approached the group.

It was at that time that Tes remembered the man he identified Ellis saying something.

“All I really heard was ‘Paramount,'” he said. It was a reference to Eastside Paramount, a rival gang.

“That’s when I got out the car,” Tes said. “I was pretty sure we were going to fight.”
