Arcadia is an upper-middle class U.S. city in Los Angeles County, located approximately 13 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley and at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Arcadia is part of a cluster of cities, along with Temple City, Rosemead, Monterey Park, San Marino, and San Gabriel, in the west San Gabriel Valley with a growing Asian population.

Arcadia largely grew up as the well to do suburb of neighboring Pasadena, with many early residents being the sons and daughters of long established Southern California families. Arcadia’s economy is driven by wholesale trade, retail trade, manufacturing, health care and social assistance, arts, entertainment, and recreation. Revenue from the Santa Anita Racetrack has long supported capital improvements for the City of Arcadia, resulting in the City having very little bonded indebtedness.

According to the 2008 census, the total population of Arcadia is 57,744 with 55.4% of residents declared as Asian, 33.3% are White, 1.3% are Black or African American, and only 11.8% are Hispanic. According to the census, 49.7% of residents are foreign born. Approximately 50.7% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 92.7% of residents have a high school degree. Also, 7.1% of families and 7.6% of individuals live below the poverty line.
