Diamond Bar is a city in eastern Los Angeles County. It occupies 14.76 sq. miles of land. Diamond Bar is approximately 27 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Diamond Bar is named after the “diamond over a bar” branding iron registered in 1918 by ranch owner Frederick E. Lewis. Located at the junction of the Pomona and Orange freeways, Diamond Bar is primarily a residential city with shopping centers interspersed within the city. The city features a public Los Angeles County golf course.
Similar to many San Gabriel Valley cities such as San Marino and Arcadia, Diamond Bar has experienced an influx of Asian American residents, especially Filipino Americans, Taiwanese American, Chinese Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Korean Americans, and Indian Americans since the 1980s. Attracted to the area’s schools and the perceived prestige of a Diamond Bar address, many affluent Asian Americans commuting to areas such as Rowland Heights and Alhambra have moved to Diamond Bar as well. In addition, some Asian-oriented businesses have since appeared in the city.
According to the 2008 census, the total population of Diamond Bar is 57,248 with 50.6% of residents declared as Asian, 36.2% are White, 3.1% are Black or African American, and 19.2% are Hispanic. According to the census, 41.2% of residents are foreign born. Approximately 45.8% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 92.3% of residents have a high school degree. Also, 1.9% of families and 2.9% of individuals live below the poverty line.
