England Gang Books

Unread post by NW10 » July 20th, 2005, 5:59 am

One of the best authors for England's underworld and particularly London is Tony Thompson.

Gangs A Journey Into The Heart of The British Underworld, i think is the best one but he has also written a book called Gangland Britain which is good but focuses more on organised crime groups from Yakuza, Triads, Asian Mafia, Italian Mafia etc... and not the modern day 'streetgangs'.

Tony Barnes Mean Streets: A Journey Through The Northern Underworld is a good chronological look at gangs and crime throughout the Victorian period right up to modern day Manchester. It looks at Triads, Victorian Policing, Yardies and South Manchester Gangs, Liverpool and Curtis Warren and Ram Raid Gangs. Even a bloke from my hometown (Brian Charrington ov Middlesbrough) gets a mention because of his relationship with Curtis Warren.

Peter Walsh Gang War, this is a brilliant book looking at Manchester and its street gang culture which emerged in the 1980's. I recommend this to anyone interested in England Gangs.

Cocky The Rise and Fall of Curtis Warren, Homeboys the Story of Birmingham Gang Wars and Gangs and Guns are also worth reading as they focus on the more modern day problems (not so much Warren but the latter two books).
