Girl, 16, Fatally Shot Just Blocks From School

(CBS) LOS ANGELES

A Hamilton High School student was fatally shot Tuesday as she walked with friends in an alley three blocks from the school, police said.

The shooters appeared to be gang members, Los Angeles police Officer Mike Lopez said. But Anna Elizabeth Interiano, 16, was an innocent victim and not a gang member.

The shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m. in an alley behind the 8900 block of Cadillac Avenue, near Robertson Boulevard, Lopez said. Anna was walking with her friends when a white sport utility vehicle with three or four people in it drove past, then parked about 200 yards from the group at the end of the alley.

A male from the sport utility vehicle got out and shot into the group, hitting Anna in the head, Lopez said. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died at about 6:30 p.m.

*It appears as if these L.A. gangs no longer have any semblance of honor, nor a code. Hell, not even the Mafia, or organized crime outfits ("reputable" ones, that is) will target innocent civilians, or children...

I think it also has to do with the population growing becoming more dense. I hate to be so negative but I see its only going to get worse.

From the Los Angeles Times

Victim's Brother Accused of Vandalism

Relative of a slain teen questioned in incident at Hamilton High.

By Arin Gencer, Times Staff Writer

July 13, 2006

The distraught brother of a Hamilton High student who was shot and killed this week allegedly vandalized a school police car after meeting with campus officials Wednesday, authorities said.

The man, whom officials did not name but family members called Christian Espinoza, was leaving the school after he had met with a crisis team member to discuss his sister's killing, said Susan Cox, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District. His car had been ticketed for parking illegally in front of the school, she said.

"He went over to a school police car, which was behind his, and jumped on the hood and kicked the windshield," Cox said. Espinoza then got into his car and drove off, she said.

School police detained Espinoza for questioning but did not arrest him, said Mike Bowman, acting deputy chief of the L.A. Unified School Police Department. Authorities have not decided whether to press charges, Bowman said.

"He was upset; he vented," Bowman said of Espinoza. "We have to have a little empathy for this family."

Espinoza's sister, Ana Elizabeth Interiano, 16, was killed Tuesday while walking from school with a group of friends in an alley near the intersection of Robertson Boulevard and Cadillac Avenue, said Sgt. Lee Sands of the Los Angeles Police Department.

A white sport utility vehicle carrying two or three people had driven past the alley, Sands said. The vehicle stopped and one person, whom witnesses identified as male, got out. Standing about 200 feet away, he fired several rounds down the alley, Sands said. Interiano was hit in the head.

She died at a hospital at about 6:17 p.m., said Fred Corral, a watch commander at the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Sands said no one else in the group of at least five was injured.

The shooter's motive was unclear, Sands said, as was whether Interiano was the target. Although Interiano appeared to have no gang affiliation, Sands said, the occupants of the SUV were believed to be gang members.

Witnesses said they had seen the same vehicle driving around the area just before the incident, which occurred at 1:30 p.m., Sands said. Interiano's friends — standing before a memorial of candles and photos on the corner near the shooting site — also said students told school police that earlier vehicle's occupants had been stopping and asking people where they were from. Bowman said police were investigating that claim.

Additional officers have been stationed at the campus, increasing the number from two to eight.

Friends planned to hold a car wash Saturday, behind a warehouse at La Cienega Boulevard and Cadillac Avenue, to raise money for Interiano's funeral.

Reward Offered For Lead In Death Of Student, 16
(CBS) LOS ANGELES

Authorities and family members of a teenager gunned down as she walked home from Hamilton High School appealed Monday for public help to track down the suspects involved in her killing.

Anna Interiano was with friends about 1:30 p.m. last Tuesday when a man got out of an SUV in the 8900 block of Cadillac Avenue and opened fire, striking the teenager in the head.

A $50,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.

"It happened there this time; it can happen anywhere next time," LAPD Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell said at a news conference held to seek public help in solving the crime.

"There's too many guns on the streets, and too many people willing to use them," McDonnell said.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related and that some in the group the victim was with may have had gang ties.

Suyapa Espinoza said her sister "was very popular. A lot of people knew her around the area. She was very nice, I don't know why this could have happened to her."

"I know there's a lot of people out there that saw the killer, and I would like to ask, beg them to come forward, give the information to the police, so they could catch these guys, so they won't do any more harm to other families," Espinoza said.

On Thursday night, following a memorial service for the teen, two young men identified as Julio Perez and William Avalos were gunned down on Cadillac Avenue at Garth Avenue, a few blocks from where she was killed.

One of them reportedly was a witness in the drive-by attack that left the teen dead.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was at a vigil for Anna when that shooting occurred, told reporters he was 150 feet away from where the shots rang out.

Anyone with more information about the case was urged to call police at (877) LAWFULL.

How many times have we read that the victim was not a gang member, and they actually were?
