A new generation of video surveillance may provide a much-needed lifeline to the police, who are at war with armed gangs targeting soft targets such as shopping malls and supermarkets.

Intelligent Video is the new kid on the closed-circuit TV block, and offers technology one would expect to find in a James Bond laboratory.

Without any human involvement, the software can identify anything from a suitcase left unattended to a group of people gathering, and immediately sound the alarm. It can even identify a man walking through a crowd in a red T-shirt.

He stressed the importance of proper surveillance
According to Steven Barry, the managing director of Chubb Integrated Systems, Intelligent Video is the future of CCTV monitoring.

In recent weeks Johannesburg has come under siege from armed gangs hitting banks, cash-in-transit vehicles and shopping centres.
