FERNDALE — Ferndale police said they cracked a gangland web of silence, fear and threats to finger a Detroit teen charged today in a shotgun slaying last month at the city’s VFW hall.

Bobby Prince McGowan, 19, of Detroit was arraigned on six counts including first-degree murder, assault with intent to commit murder and felony firearm crimes in the death of Charles Dorchy, 16, of Detroit and the critical wounding of Tyshaun Thompson, also 16, of Royal Oak Township.

Police said McGowan and scores of other youths, including the two victims, crashed the party before McGowan, shortly after midnight, pulled a sawed-off shotgun from under his coat and fired one shot at Thompson. The blast went through him and on to kill Dorchy, Lt. William Wilson said Friday. McGowan has a previous police record that includes a conviction for carrying a concealed weapon, Wilson said.

In Ferndale District Court, Magistrate Larue Mead ordered McGowan held without bond in the Oakland County Jail to await a conference Jan. 21 between prosecutors and McGowan’s attorney.

Members of gangs from Detroit and Royal Oak Township crashed the sweet sixteen party held Dec. 19 for two girls who attend Ferndale High School, Wilson said. An estimated 200 youths and adults packed the VFW hall with a capacity of 175, he said.

Ferndale police were slow to release the names of the teens who were shot and the locations of the suspected gangs.

Late last month, Chief Michael Kitchen said: "We’re keeping a lot of this under wraps because there’s a big fear of retaliation” by gang members against opposition gang members.

“We have information they’re riding around, trying to do mischief to the other group,” Kitchen said in the interview in late December.
