West Side Pirus [WSP] are a predominately African-American street gang located on the westside of Compton, CA. They were originally known as the Piru Street Boys founded around 1969 by Sylvester “Puddin” Scott, Vincent Owens, Lorenzo “LB” Benton, Larry “Tam” Watts and A.C. Moses and others making them one of the oldest Black gangs in LA County. The founders named their gang, Piru, after the street they lived on in the western section of Compton.
When Raymond Washington was attempting to transform street groups into the Crips, he was able to convince the leadership of the Pirus to embrace the Crip’s identity for a very short time in 1970. That relationship was severed because the Pirus had already been engaged in conflict with Mac Thomas and the Compton Crips.
The Pirus eventually broke away from the Crips, severing all ties, and then became one of the main rivals to the Crips. In from 1971 to 1973 the violence between the Pirus and the Crips in Compton escalated resulting in several murders.

- Jerome “Baby Black” Dunn, 27 (September 9, 1991 – May 29, 2019), died from blunt force trauma as a result of a car accident that occurred on Avalon Boulevard at Rosecrans Avenue. Dunn and passenger, Taylor Coates, 20, were traveling in a Ford Mustang southbound on Avalon Boulevard when they made a left turn eastbound Rosecrans Avenue into the path of a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.
- Joel Alexander “Bushead” Randall, 36 (January 15, 1987 – October 1, 2023), shot and killed on Crenshaw & 54th Street while on his motorcycle waiting at at the red light.
