Crenshaw Mafia Gang [CMG, CMGB, CMG 104th Street] are a predominately African-American street gang located in the City of Inglewood in Los Angeles County. The original founders started this gang as a spin-off of the Inglewood Family Gang in 1981. Their turf is located on the westside of Crenshaw Blvd off Century in a neighborhood called “The Bottoms,” and 104th Street is their core location.
In 1997 the City of Inglewood served the CMG with a gang injunction in an effort to displace the gang as developers rebuilt the Century corridor with a new Costco, Red Lobster, Office Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond and over dozen banks, restaurants and retail stores. In a government document published by the City of Inglewood they referred to this new gentrification plan:
“The Village, formerly known as Darby-Dixon, is located just east of the International Business Park Specific Plan, and is bounded by Club Drive on the west, Century Boulevard on the north, Crenshaw Boulevard on the east, and 104th Street on the south. When the Specific Plan was adopted in 1998, the area was experiencing a high level of crime and blight, including impacts from high
aircraft noise levels, physical deterioration, increased costs for property owners, and diminished quality of life for residents”
The gang is still active in “The Bottoms” community of Inglewood, but due to gentrification, demographic shifts and urban development the gang’s presence has dropped since the late 1990s.
