LOS ANGELES — Carnell “U Dub 5” Snell Jr., 18, (November 25, 1997 – October 1, 2016) was laid to rest Saturday afternoon. On October 1, 2016, he was fatally shot by the LAPD after they claimed that he posed a threat to officers.

The LAPD released footage from a nearby store that showed Snell with a weapon in his left hand, but he fled in the opposite direction of the police.

According to Chief Beck, after Snell fled he came to a stop at a gate, turned toward the officers on the 1700 block of 107th Street, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. Snell was pronounced dead at the scene, and according to Beck, a .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun was recovered less than 5 feet away from him.

It is believed that none of the actual shooting was captured on video and according to some witness, Snell did not make any threatening movement with the gun towards the police.

This shooting sparked massive protest against the LAPD and the family is planning to file a law suit against the City of Los Angeles.
