LAPD Shoot and kill unarmed motorist in South Los Angeles

UPDATE: On March 6, 2008 the LAPD releases their official statement on this shooting. The motorist was identified as Maurice LeRoy Cox, and he was not armed, but officers shot because they thought he pointed a gun.
UPDATE: On March 14, 2008 attorney Carl Douglas files a multi-million dollar claim against LAPD on behalf of Cox’s widow.
At about 7:00 pm last night, a hit-and-run driver crashed his vehicle into a tree next to the southbound lane on Crenshaw Blvd just south of 57th Street. As the suspect was shaking off the effects of the collision, one LAPD cruiser pulled behind and asked the motorist to exit the vehicle. Using the bull horn the officers continued to tell the motorist to exit the vehicle but he did not respond. The officers did not approach the vehicle and were taking extreme precautionary measures as they continued to tell the motorist to exit vehicle.
About five minutes later, a second LAPD cruiser pulled behind the motorist, but the driver did not exit the vehicle and the situation appeared to be getting tense. There were paramedics treating some of the hit-and-run victims one block away on Crenshaw as this stand off continued. The air unit was now over head as several more LAPD cruisers pulled in behind the motorist.
At about 7:21pm the driver abruptly exited the vehicle and began to back peddle away from the police, and after a few steps, the LAPD fired about three shots. The motorist began to run at full speed into the US Bank parking lot on Crenshaw & Slauson, entering the lot on the north side of the bank. The LAPD officers gave chase following him into the parking lot from his rear while other officers cut him off on the Slauson side. They fired on him multiple times from both directions and the suspect fell in the lot behind an LAPD cruiser on the Slauson side of the parking lot.
The suspect was on the ground and moving after being shot, and then the officers took him into custody. The paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital. He either died in route or at the hospital.

I will tell you why first of all when we hit someone we pull over we dont run but I will give you the benefit of the doubt lets say we do run, well then if we ran into a tree and the LAPD has me surrounded and tells me to get out of the car, guess what I do? This is my friend's brother. We live in Delaware and she just found out today about his k-ingg. He had been out of prison for awhile and had gotten married and was working his own business as a power washer. I don't know what happened, but he was a man trying to get his life together from what I understand. Does anyone have any information on the hit and run? He could have been very disoriented if he hit the tree at a high rate of speed.

You didnt even write the whole story. When he was baracated in the car he told the officers that he was going to k them. This was after Cox told the Officers to back off from his car or he would k them, while he reached in his glove box for a weapon. Then he takes off running and while Officers are chasing him, Cox decides to point a possible weapon at the chasing Officers. What part about that behavior sounds lawful and ok with you? . Now everybody is crying about how officers are kers and on and on. Instead of screaming police brutality you should first look at this mans action and ask you self if that is ok.
Knightowl, would your opinion change if you found out that he was semi-unconscious when he hit that tree, and that he never said anything to the police officers, never reached for anything, and when he got out the car he had nothing in his hands?

Its in policy to shoot at a fleein felon and regardless, if the officers had a resonable belief that the susp did have a fire arm its also in policy. If i was an officer and believed he had a gun, im doing the same. its either me going home to my family or some asshole who just plowed down innocent victims.

You can't shoot someone because you "believe," that's why these officers are trained. Trained not to k someone they "believe" is a felon, or "believe" is armed. Second, there is no doubt that he was a fleeing felon, because he just committed a hit-and-run and fled from police. The only reason he stopped was because he ran out of talent and crashed. I have seen comments attacking the LAPD and supporting the criminal in this case. I find it interesting that none of those attacking LEO are asking about the victims of this crime, those hit my this criminal. As a criminal justice instructor, I also find the comments about police procedures very funny.

That's one less criminal on the streets as far as I'm concerned. Get them out of the gene pool as far as I care. The police were close enough to see if he was armed or not. Officers who fired on the deceased should be charged appropriately. This was an unlawful k-ingg. Here in Australia, the police involved would be looking at prison time.
