Varrio Dog Town [Dog Town Rifa, DTR, v.DTR, DT] is a predominately Hispanic street gang located in the community of the William Mead Housing projects near downtown Los Angeles on North Main Street in a community also known as North Industrial District. According to researchers at streetgangs.com, Dog Town is the oldest active gang neighborhood in all of Los Angeles County going back to a period from 1895 to 1900. Dog Town is probably the oldest street gang in the United States.
During the 1890s, “Dog Town” was the community of run down homes and poor Irish, Italian and Mexican immigrants located just north of the Central Business District of downtown Los Angeles. The young boys were named for a nearby Los Angeles City Dog Pound that was moved near Downey & Aurora in 1885. Although some have suggested that this community received its name because of numerous stray dogs roaming their neighborhood, that theory is most likely untrue, because the City had an aggressive “dog catching” policy that went into effect in 1872, so it was extremely unlikely for any community in Los Angeles’ downtown area to be over run over with excess stray dogs. Secondly, the references to this community as “Dog Town” do not appear in any newspaper until the pound was moved to the Downey Street (now Spring Street) location in 1885.
In the early 1870s the police were charged with controlling a growing dog population but in the process, they would often “net” dogs that were not strays including those that had proper registration, in an effort to either charge a pet owner the $2.00 fine or to sell the pet to a new owner. The dog pound system was often alleged to be corrupt by legitimate dog owners and there were several instances where legal dogs came up missing and later found to have been sold to new owners by the City dog catchers.
The City of Los Angeles’ Humane Commission completed construction on a state of the art Animal Shelter at 214 Ann Street after decades of animal abuse and corruption dating back to the 1870s, Los Angeles Times, February 29, 1929
One of the first dog pounds in Los Angeles was located on a parcel of land between Main and Los Angeles Streets and between 1st and Temple Streets, but closer to 1st Street. In 1878, when this area was residential, the community complained about the growing dog pound, the noise and the dozens of captured dogs that would escape through a broken fence on the Los Angeles Street side (east) of the pound. In 1883 the pound was moved east, down 1st Street to the banks of the Los Angeles River. Although this location was further away from the residential community, there were allegations of improper treatment of the dogs and in 1884, the Committee on Police was “instructed to establish a dog pound on any available land belonging to the city.” By 1885, the new dog pound was located by the Los Angeles River between the Downey Street (North Spring) Bridge and what is now called Baker Street. In 1894, nine years later, the dog pound was destroyed in a fire.

In 1929, thirty-five year after the Downey Street pound was destroyed, the city built the most advanced dog pound in the United States in the same community, at the cost of $40,000 on land purchased on Ann Street between Naud Street and Weyse Street for $20,000. The City also decided to change the negative perception that had grown between the City and animal advocates and the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) for decades about the mistreatment of dogs by the City pound for decades. City officials stopped using the term “pound” and officially called the new facility an “animal shelter” that was now committed to the humane treatment of dogs that was ignored by the city for over 50 years.

There were other cliques before them, and there are more cliques after them that have kept DOG TOWN still going. The Pequenos and the Midgets are the ones who really kicked up things with the varrio DT up by Highland Park, next to NELA13. The Chicos and Dukes during those times stayed mostly at the proyectos. But we were always the same varrio. There was never any doubt about it. It is sad that now there’s problems between us. All of the original Dogtowners in highland park are from the projects. In fact, all those Pueblo Perros hit Nightingale and then Franklin, that’s how come we set up shop over there. And yes DT did add Rifa in the placasos. That was the custom back then. Just about everyone used it next to their placa, and if you don’t believe me, go check out the old picture albums or go check out the underside of the bridges over the river and you’ll see in full DTR DE TE ERE DOG TOWN RIFA. Youngsters may not use it nowadays, but we did have it back then. And another thing, DT never ever claimed no china town, chales! Chinatown was Varrio Alpine, not us. We ain’t never claimed that. Puro DOG TOWN, the Brick City. Dog Town Santa Ana, Dogs Town Riva, and Dog Town Stoners from Gardena are not connected with the original Los Angeles DOG TOWN. The DT in Santa Ana is homegrown 714 area code, and the ones in Riverside are a young varrio. The ones in Gardena used to be known as the Bell Park Stoners, and they are from the late 70s (1978). They were stoners first before they got into the game. DOG TOWN has a much older history that the william mead housing projects. The Pjs were built in the 1940s, but the varrio was already around from before. It used to stretch from the turnaround tracks around college street, all the way to the cornfield, then to the river and even crossed all the way to the wineries right next to Clover Street. So yeah Dog, the varrio covered a lot more ground before the city tore down the neighborhood and pushed everyone out of the area, and the ones that remained kicked it off at the newly built projects. Oh and by the way, Dog Town does not get its name from that dog pound on Ann Street, nopes. Dog Town pre-dates both the original dog pound and the later one built right there on Ann Street. I was in the Projects yesterday (08/20/2015) and I saw that HIV infected whore La Youngster getting out of her little car near the Keylite building. La Youngster looked as if she just done working the streets as a hooker. Once a whore, always a dirty skank whore.
After I walked around the Projects I noticed that the Housing Authority is finally picking up the trash that falls over the big trash dumpsters onto the ground. The DogTrash Projects were beginning to smell like Dogish.
I thought I spotted Klever from DogTrash but I was wrong, last I heard he mived out of La Puente with his ladyand kid but I could be wrong, I was hoping to spot him so I could ask him how is his nephew Franky doing hahahahaha. I did hear that his other nephew Luis Jr is going to college which is nice since everyone else in his family never amounted to anything in life except live off welfare.
When it started to get late I still did not see other guys from DogTrash, me and my friend walked to Ann st School and noticed that the little memorial for the dead gangster Happy looked beat down. Me and my friend both spit on it as we usually do whenever we walk past it.
I managed to run into two of my other friends that also told me that the DogTrash gang is rarely active now. They said that as quickly as those mutts try to become “active” residents call the cops on them. So i just came on here for the first time because I was told that people are coming on here to expose DT and after reading the comments on here I can’t stop laughing… I’ve been living in these Projects for 20 years and i’ve seen a lot of things, especially the smart crap the DT gang has done.
The guys from DT started breaking into many cars, into peioles homes, they started robbing little kids that go to the Ann Street Elementary School, they even assulted two elderly people at night and stabbed one 4 times all because they didn’t give a guy from DT money. So today I went to the DT Projects to visit my friends and as usual I didn’t see any members from DT… my friends told me that a week ago a guy from DT was arrested for drinking beer in public, my friends told me that when the cops spotted this mutt he dropped the beer can and ran to the Ann St School, a cop tackled this idiot and used the stun gun on him. The idiot from DT was yelling “stop it, i can’t feel my legs”. The squad car pulled up and he was arrested hahaha.
I asked my friends if they knew who was the idiot that was arrested, they didn’t know since it was getting dark, they couldn’t see his face well.
As the day went on I thought I spotted a guy from DT but I was wrong, it was actually a Christian cholo that came to the Projects attempting to convert gang bangers to Christ, I told the Christian cholo that he should head to south central since the DT Projects are pretty much free from loser ass gangbangers. The Christian cholo walked away laughing.
The guys from DT are some of the smartest people I’ve ever seen and came across in my life. Thank god their pathetic gang is no more.

Damn people came on here to all a lot of crap on DT non stop. DT was kind of big at one time but now it’s not active. There’s a lot of Black families living in the Projects now. I always come to the projects a few times a month and everyone tells me it’s very peaceful. And yes, Residents are always calling the LAPD on DT members which is why it’s not active. DT is pretty much dead now. I wouldn’t even call it a Gang anymore. The last time a gang member was spotted in the projects was three years ago but the Residents called the cops and he was arrested quick.
I heard the only place where DT is attempting to hold their ground is on Ave 53rd in Highland Park AKA Montevista St and in South Gate on Kansas Ave AKA Kansas Boys and Pysas Locos. Gardena has their own DT as well, so does Santa Ana on 1st and Bristol on those two little white apartments but overall all DT gangs are small and almost dying out. The only things keeping the DT name alive these days are the DogTown Skateboard company and the movies about Skaters. Aside from that this website should declare DT an inactive dead gang asap.
