Vernon Hood Locos – South Los Angeles

Back in the mid 1990s we were five members of Sur Mexicanos, or SMS 13. At the time of the Sur Mexicanos clique when we were only five members we changed our name to Vernon Neighborhood Locos primarily because we were catching excessive heat from the local gangs in the area, mainly the PlayBoyS.
We realized that it took too long to hit it up on the wall, so we shortened our name VERNON HooD LocoS 13. We decided to strike the varrio up, so we put VHLS, or VHD X3 afterwards. The early members included Big Spooky, Trusty, P-man, Ghost, Lil Ricky, Tripper, Stomper, Crazy-Boy, Smiley, and Rakoon. Since the majority of us lived on Vernon Avenue we decided to keep Vernon Hood LocoS as oppose to Vernon Neighborhood LocoS, but it’s all the same, we claim City of Vernon as well.
From 1994 through 1998 our hood came up with other clicks such as VERNON HOOD ROOFTP LOCOS (VH-MLS inactive), VERNON HOOD MALOS (VH-PWS active) and VERNON HOOD PEEWEE (VH-PWS active). If your from the locos you are considered an Oh Gee. Sevas RIP de VHLS is the first homeboy to get killed. Some of the female members included Flaca, China, Silent, Shady, Payasa, and Whisper, but as time went by we stop recruiting girls because we learn the hard way that they are double trouble.
Our main enemy are the Playboys and it started with territorial dispute and escalated from us becoming apart of their gang, the homeboys did not approve of it, so we have had beef ever since. Primera Flats started a beef with the homeboy Chilo when he was at a stop light on 23rd and San Pedro heading north bound when 3 figures approach him and started hitting his car breaking his front windshield. He got away and the homeboys went back and retaliated. Other rivalries included on with BMS-Barrio Mojados-(on & off) and the Street SaintS (STS) 43rd kukes. With STS, this rivalry started in late 1996. Street Saints approached us and said we didn’t go to any meetings so either join us or be against us so we decided to join them and were known as the Vernon Hood Street Saints, or VHSTS.
When we joined with the Street Saints it was 43rd and 44th click, but tension began, and we broke off from them. Our neighborhood stretches from Vernon (South) crossing Central (east) to McKinley (west) to 42nd Place (north).

So, you guys fight for territory? If I’m not mistaken, this turf consists of dilapidated houses occupied by welfare recipients. It’s like fighting over a scrap of feted meat. What’s the point? Why not just admit that you’re all poor and uneducated and leave it at that?
First hand experience in gang psychology, allow me to share. There are individual beliefs of the gang member and then a collected belief of the gang as a unit. I dont think it is criminal thinking as much as it is a who cares attitude aka learned helplessness. Hope that helps I give gang trainings.
