Lil Watts (LWS) in Hawthorne
The most asked question about this barrio is “why do they call themselves Lil Watts when they are in Hawthorne, several miles southwest from Watts?” The answer to that question is related to when they actually formed. During the late 1960s, several guys from Hawthorne began a barrio in the most run down section of Hawthorne and it was Watts that had a reputation of being an area of Los Angeles that was most feared. Los Angeles had recently experienced the worst urban uprising in US history commonly known as the “Watts Riots,” and during this time areas such as “The Jungles,” “South Central,” Compton and East LA were not places characterized as communities plagued with high levels of violence. There was a small section in Hawthorne between Compton Blvd (south) and Rosecrans (north) and Cerise (west) and Crenshaw (east) that people avoided and referred to is as a place just as bad as “Watts.”
By the time 1969 came around the gang that formed there decided to take on this identity of being from a neighborhood that was just as feared as Watts, calling themselves Lil Watts and becoming the first gang to form in Hawthorne. The neighborhood is uniquely located at the intersection of three different municipalities, Hawthorne, Gardena, and Alondra (Unincorporated LA County), and this gang represents an excellent example of how ineffective using only prolonged police suppression can be when addressing gang violence. During the 1980s and early 1990s, law enforcement from several agencies aggressively policed this very small section in the South Bay that was plagued with assaults, drugs and the occasional murder, but over the years we have seen the neighborhood grow as a result of it. Although many people were arrested and sent to prison, the heightened police presence had no deterrence value, and the gang continued to grow not just physically, but in the minds and hearts of those that lived there.
Today there are several other gangs in Hawthorne but Lil Watts (LWS) remains to be the most known and established gang in the area with several cliques including the Traviesos, Underground Locos, Tiny Locos, Demons, Baby Locos, Winos and Dukes.
In 1990, the cities west of the 110 Freeway (Gardena, Hawthorne, Lawndale, & Redondo Beach) changed the name of Compton Blvd to Marine Avenue, but not without resistance or controversy. Manhattan Beach had already called the far west side of the road Marine Avenue since the early part of the 20th Century, but there were some that wanted to erase the stigma of Compton from their cities. Robert Adams, a former Compton councilman, said the name change was the result of racism because the City of Compton was known as a Black city. Redondo Beach council member Stevan Colin casted the only vote against the name change in their city, questioning the motives behind it stating that Hawthorne and Lawndale have nothing to do with the Marine.
