Willowbrook is an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County. It is located just south of the 105 Freeway and northwest of Compton. It assumes 3.7 miles of land. Willowbook was named after the long willows and shallow brooks that took up the area in the early 1800s. The 94-acre Earvin “Magic” Johnson County Recreation Area is mostly located in Willowbrook and parts of Los Angeles.

In 2000, the population was 34,138 according to the national census. The population is very evenly made up of both Blacks (44.9%) and Hispanics (53.6%). Whites only make up 16.1% and Asians are only .3% of the population. 29.4% are foreign born citizens, and 51.4% speak a different language other than English in the home.

Females make up 51.7% of the population while males only make up 48.3 percent. 29.9% of households had a female householder with no husband present. 30.7% of individuals and 26.7% of families live below the poverty line. Only 6.3% of residents have a Bachelor’s degree or higher and only 48.1% graduated from high school.
