Montebello is a city in Los Angeles County, within the southwestern part of the San Gabriel Valley. It is located on 8.4 sq miles of land just 8 miles east of downtown. It is sometimes considered part of the Gateway Cities, and the city is a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. The name, Montebello, means “beautiful mountain” in both Italian and Spanish. In the early 1900s, Montebello was a known source for oil springs. By 1920, its oil fields were producing one-eighth of California’s crude oil.
Montebello is home to the oldest Armenian Community in Los Angeles County. The Armenian Martyrs Monument at Bicknell Park commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman Turks is the largest monument found on public property in the World. After World War 2, many Japanese citizens who lost their homes after being relocated to internment camps, settled in Montebello. Today, there is a large Japanese population (11%) in Montebello.
According to the 2008 US Census, the total population of Montebello is 63,957 people. 45.2% of residents are White, 78.2% are Hispanic, 9.6% are Asian, and .9% are Black or African American. 38.3% of residents are foreign born, and 75.6% speak a language other than English in the home. 16.3% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 69% of residents have a high school degree. 12.6% of families and 13.2% of individuals live below the poverty line.
