Pico Rivera is one of the Gateway Cities located in southeastern Los Angeles County. It has a total area of 8.8 sq. miles and is bordered by Downey on the southwest, Santa Fe Springs on the southeast, Whittier on the east, City of Industry on the northeast, Montebello on the northwest, and Commerce on the west.
Pico Rivera was incorporated in 1958 from the merger of the unincorporated communities of Pico (named for Pío Pico, the last Mexican governor of California) and Rivera. A number of parks occupy the landscape, including Rivera Park on Shade Lane, Smith Park on Rosemead and Mines, Pico Park on Beverly Boulevard, Rio Vista Park, and Stream Land Park at the north end of Durfee Road.
According to the 2008 US Census, the total population of Pico Rivera is 66,590 people. 92.1% of residents have some makeup of Hispanic, 59.5% of residents are considered White, 1.5% are Asian, and .8% are Black or African American. 33% of residents are foreign born, and 72.5% speak a language other than English in the home. 9.6% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and 63.5% of residents have a high school degree. 9.4% of families and 10.1% of individuals live below the poverty line.
