LAPD Officer attempts to enforce a gang injunction in the Jungles against the Black P Stone Bloods

The goal of the injunction when initially introduced was to “shut down the gang” but several years later the gang is still there and they are still warring with the 18th Street gang. In fact, every gang that has ever had an injunction placed on their neighborhood in the 22 years of gang injunctions is still present in their community. Even after the FBI came in under “Operation Stone Cold” and arrested dozens of member, the community is still plagued with ongoing social challenges that limits the opportunities for young people growing up here. After the arrests and indictment of 18 people in 2005 the gaps and voids created through that massive sweep are eventually replaced by a younger generation of youth and the cycle of illegal drug use and violence continue.
The injunction is viewed by many as a tool that does not mitigate violence but allows police to legally harass residents. Being under this court order allows the police to treat an individual as if they were on parole without having committed a crime. There have been countless complaints made against police in communities where gang injunctions have been imposed and earlier this year, California lawmakers were discussing modifications that should be made to gang injunctions, during the last several years, youth who have never been convicted of a crime and/or who have never been identified as a documented gang member were being served with gang injunctions.
