Athens is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County. It is located in the South Los Angeles region, near the intersection of the Century and the Harbor freeways. To the south is the city of Gardena, to the west is Hawthorne, and the to the east are the unincorporated community of Willowbrook and the community of Watts (City of LA). Athens contains Athens County Park, Helen Keller County Park, and the Chester L. Washington County Golf Course.

The total population of Athens is 9,101 according to the 2000 census. African Americans make up a 56.1% majority of Athens, followed by Hispanics at 39.3%. Whites make up 12.9% and Asians are only 1.6% of the population. The average household size is 3.54 and the average family size is 3.83.

Only 12.1% of residents graduated with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, and 62.2% graduated with a high school degree or higher. Only 27.3% are foreign born residents and 40.3% speak a language other than English in the home. 25.8% of individuals live below the poverty line, which over doubles the national average.
