Monterey Park is a city in the San Gabriel Valley area in Los Angeles County. It has a total area of 7.7 sq. miles of land. The city boundaries include Alhambra to the north, Rosemead to the northeast, and Montebello to the south. The city’s motto is “Pride in the past, Faith in the future”.
Beginning in the 1970s, well-educated and affluent Asian Americans began settling in the west San Gabriel Valley, primarily to Monterey Park. Monterey Park is considered by some to be the first suburban Chinatown of Los Angeles. In 1985 the City Council of Monterey Park approved drafting of a proposal that would require all businesses in Monterey Park to display English language identification on business signs.
According to the 2008 US Census, the total population of Monterey Park is 60,688 people. 63.7% of residents are Asian, 29.8% are Hispanic, 17.5% are White, and only .1% are Black or African American. 53.2% of residents are foreign born, and 76% speak a language other than English in the home. 25.8% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and 74.1% of residents have a high school degree. 9.2% of families and 13.2% of individuals live below the poverty line.
